A Tasca do Petrol

I'm almost ashamed of it, but this weekend I'm going to tell you about.. is 2 months ago (A)
But! I want to post it anyway ..

It is Saturday, June 1st and we are free!! We all crawl out of bed late after a busy week. Worked a lot. Probably this is the last free Saturday we are going to get, the three of us are lying on the roof terrace in the sun, it is already around 1 pm and we still have to eat, but are not looking forward to anything. Zé short for José only wants one thing. ''Black Pig''.

It's a warm day and the best address in the Algarve is deep in the mountains, about a 40-minute drive, it will be a warm ride! 5-sec thinking but I say let's GO! You can eat there until 3 pm so we have to hurry. Michelle has other plans and goes out with friends, Zé and I jump into his cool old timer car and go on our way. We go to a "restaurant" called A Tasca do Petrol. Freely translated means; Tasca is a typical Portuguese eatery, often run by a family, and Petrol means that they literally provide food; petrol, petrol for humans.

On the way we go deeper into the mountains, this makes the ride just as fun, explore the area, I am the Tomtom which means that we detour a few kilometers which I do not mind at all haha only our stomachs start to complain. Beautiful hairpin bends make us see beautiful views, where you can look far and deep into the mountains or look towards the sea, sometimes a village or a supermarket makes it livable further it is only nature, very nice.

At the top of Monchique on sandy roads with many holes, a number of houses are lined up on the left, including the eatery A Tasca do Petrol, very endearing to see the access to enter. Everything is practical in order to feed as many people as possible. This is mainly not about the interior, but about the food. Zé already knows what he wants and immediately orders it for me to. Ive got no input and he knows what's good right, so the chef orders. First round: small snacks, pieces of parts of pork. And we're not talking about just a pig here! I must first explain this, because the pigs here are very special and healthy, not as we know them in the Netherlands. Here they roam freely through the mountains and mainly eat acorns, which gives the fat in the pig a nutty taste. These black pigs live only in Portugal and Spain and these countries have also received the rights to sell this special pig under the name Black Pig, The Iberico pig. So I get this in front of me! And then pieces of ear, belly, leg, liver and black pudding ..
Especially the ear, which I was the first to taste, you have to nibble on, think of the edges of a bacon that are a bit harder, tougher and crunchier, it seems a bit like that, now I really had to switch gears in my head that I didn't think too much about what I was chewing ... with my eyes closed and the taste is fine meat, but not my favorite. A piece of liver on the other hand was again very soft and nice flavors. As a main course we got 2 large bowls with the legs and the belly which were very tasty and delicious with rich sauce and cabbage as a vegetable stew. This fairly heavy meal ends with an espresso and an Aguardente de Medronho, translated as fire water because it burns your throat and stomach and is good for digestion.

Zé words about pork: "It's not pretty but it tastes really really good"
I find it a special, fun experience! Haha real Portuguese food and drinks in a Tasca and probably not the last Tasca where I will eat.
